About Garrett

Pittsburgh based artist Garrett Hain and his work have evolved over the years. As a younger artist, Garrett’s paintings had a large conceptual meaning, woven with symbolism and iconic imagery, ideas that he wanted to express through paint. Over the years, he found his passion to be in painting techniques, specifically in the application, the marks made with the brush or knife, the use of color, and the depiction of form. Garrett often works to describe two goals in his paintings, depicting form through value and color, as well as illustrate form with brush work by carving the subject with paint.  Garrett searches for a subject that has a balance of subtle shifts in shape while possessing variations strong enough to be interesting. In Garrett’s landscape paintings he works to depict form through marks and color, to capture a familiarity in the scene.  A scene that feels universal to the viewer and their connection to the outdoors. Garrett has also thrived as a pet portrait artist over the past five years, his organic connection between his pet portraits and animals stems from the volunteer work Garrett and his wife do with various animal shelters and humane organizations throughout Pittsburgh. Garrett graduated from Edinboro University in 2009 with a Bachelors degree in art education with a concentration in oil painting. Alongside his artistic career Garrett has been teaching art in Mt. Lebanon School district for nine years. Teaching has allowed Garrett to share his passion for the arts with his community and share inspiration between his personal work and his classroom.
